Its early years were marked by hardship. Only weeks after opening, a fire tore through the site, destroying stores of barley, the kiln, and parts of the malting floor. Soon after, tragedy struck again when worker James Clark lost his life in a boiler accident.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"603\" data-end=\"717\"\u003eFollowing Barclay’s death in 1854, the distillery changed hands and was sold at auction to William Richie in 1857.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"719\" data-end=\"1083\"\u003eGlenury Royal’s maltings were closed in 1968, although spirit production continued for nearly twenty years afterward. Operations were eventually suspended on 31 May 1985, and in 1992 the decision was made to end whisky production permanently.
